About Christos Staikouras

  • Christos Staikouras (pronounced [?xristos stai?'kuras]; born 12 August 1973) is a Greek economist and politician who is currently New Democracy's Coordinator of Economic Affairs.
  • Since the 2007 legislative election, he has been a Member of the Hellenic Parliament (MP) for Phthiotis.
  • After the 2019 election, he was appointed Minister for Finance in the Cabinet of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
  • Staikouras was born in Lamia, Phthiotis, and studied mechanical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens.
  • He went on to complete an MBA at Imperial College London and a PhD in banking at City University London.
  • He worked as an analyst for the Bank of England and then Eurobank Ergasias before becoming a lecturer at the Athens University of Economics and Business in 2002.
  • He continued in this role whilst taking on additional responsibilities, including at the University of Thessaly and the Hellenic Open University.
  • In 2006, he was made an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Athens University of Economics and Business, going on leave in 2007. He was first elected as a New Democracy MP for Phthiotis at the 2007 election.
  • He has been re-elected in all elections since, and in June 2012 was appointed as an Alternate Minister for Finance, serving until January 2015.
