About Sevdalin Minchev

  • Sevdalin Minchev Angelov (Bulgarian: ???????? ?????? ???????; born July 25, 1974 in Gorna Oryahovitsa, Veliko Tarnovo) is a retired male weightlifter from Bulgaria.
  • He is a four-time Olympian (1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004).
  • At the 2000 Sidney Summer Olympics, Minchev was part of a widespread Bulgarian cheating scandal and was stripped of his medal, disqualified, and his results nullified.
  • He competed at 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and won a bronze medal in the men's 56 kg division. DOPING SCANDAL AT 2000 OLYMPICS Minchev qualified for the Bulgarian 2000 Olympic team and actually did compete in the 56 kg category.
  • Unfortunately, he and teammates Izabela Dragneva, and Ivan Ivanov, all failed their doping tests within 3 days of each other, all testing positive for the banned diuretic furosemide. This did not come as a complete shock as multiple members of the Bulgarian weightlifting teams in previous Olympic competitions in 1976, 1984, 1988, & 1996 had been found to be cheating and stripped of their medals.
  • In this Olympics the IOC and the IWF cited their 'Three Strikes and You're Out' rule and Minchev and the entire Bulgarian weightlifting team were disqualified, thrown out, and unable to finish in the middle of the competition due to their unethical practices.
