He competed in the men's outdoor singles event at the 1912 Summer Olympics.
He reached the quarterfinal in which he lost to South African Harold Kitson in straight sets.Salm-Hoogstraeten played in six ties for the Austrian Davis Cup team between 1924 and 1928 and compiled a record of four wins and eight losses.
