  • Macauley served in the 16th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War.
  • In 1868, he served as Dunn County, Wisconsin District Attorney.
  • He was Menomonie City Attorney from 1882 to 1890.
  • From 1873 to 1881 and again from 1897, Macauley also served as Dunn County, (Wisconsin) County Judge.
