About Archie Harris (athlete)

  • Archie Harris (July 03, 1918 - 1965) was an American discus thrower. As Indiana University student he won the 1940 NCAA Track and Field Championships, defending his title 1941 with the world record of 53.26 m.
  • In 1941 he also became US champion. In World War II he was a bomber pilot, but as an African American he couldn't get a job as a commercial pilot after the war.
  • Finally he became physical education teacher at the Harlem, New York YMCA.In 2001 he was introduced into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame.
