Emily Anne Thornberry (born 27 July 1960) is a senior British politician who has served in the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn as Shadow Foreign Secretary since 2016, and Shadow First Secretary of State since 2017.
A member of the Labour Party, she has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Islington South and Finsbury since 2005.
Thornberry practised as a barrister from 1985 to 2005.
She was first elected to Parliament in 2005, and served as Shadow Attorney General in Ed Miliband's shadow cabinet from 2011 until she resigned in 2014 after sending a tweet that was described as 'snobby'.
After Jeremy Corbyn won the 2015 leadership election, Thornberry was appointed Shadow Minister of State for Employment.
In January 2016, she was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, and in June 2016 she was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.
