In 1912 he became a lecturer at the University of Paris, where from 1930 he served as a professor of post-classical and Modern Greek and of neo-Hellenic literature.In 1898–99 he made two trips to the island of Chios, from where he recorded music of traditional folk songs and dances, some of which were put to musical score by composer Paul Le Flem.
