About Dale Greig

  • Dale Greig (15 May 1937 – 12 May 2019) was a Scottish long-distance runner who was recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations as having set a world best in the women's marathon on 23 May 1964 with a time of 3:27:45.
  • Greig held world's best title until Mildred Sampson set a new mark nearly three months later.With this performance, she became the first woman to break 3hr 30min for the marathon distance.
  • Her record was set on 23 May 1964 at the Isle of Wight Marathon where she was followed around the course by an ambulance.
  • It was her first attempt at the distance. She was also the first woman to run the 55-mile London-to-Brighton race in 8:30 in 1972 – seven years before female competitors were officially allowed.
  • In 1974, at the age of 37, she won the first international championship marathon for women, at the world veterans' championships in Paris. Grieg died on 12 May 2019 aged 81 in Paisley, Renfrewshire.
