About Andreas Anagnostakis

  • Dr Andreas Anagnostakis (1826 โ€“ March 27, 1897) was a Greek physician. He was born on the island of Antikythera in 1826 to a family that originated in Anopolis, Sfakia, Crete.
  • He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens on June 26, 1849 and did his ophthalmological training in Paris and Berlin.
  • He is credited for the development of the hand-held ophthalmoscope, thus significantly advancing the design and use of the original ophthalmoscope invented by Hermann von Helmholtz.
  • Besides his fame as a great doctor and scientist, Anagnostakis was an accomplished author and poet.
  • He also served as Dean of the Medical School of the University of Athens (1871โ€“72 and 1876โ€“77) and as President (Rector) of the University (1877โ€“79). Anagnostakis died in Athens.
