About Najmul Millat

  • Ayatullah 'Najm al-?asan, popularly known as Najmul Millat or Najmul Ulama, (25 May 1863 – 18 April 1938) was a faqih (Islamic jurist) and the founder of Jamia Nazmia, the oldest Shia religious institution of India.
  • He trained several Ulama such as Syed Sibte Hasan Naqvi, Farman Ali, Mohammad Haroon, Mohammad Dawood, Kifayat Hussain, Adeel Akhtar, and Jaffer Hussain.
  • They all did Mumtazul Afazil from Jamia Nazmia.Najmul Millat was born on 25 May 1863 (6th Dhu'l Hijjah 1279) to Akbar Hussain of Amroha.
  • He was a disciple and son-in-law of Mufti Syed Mohammad Abbas.
  • Mufti Mohammad Abbas wrote more than 300 books.
  • Najmul Millat studied all the higher faculties, including fiqh and U?ul al-fiqh in India under his guidance.Najmul Millat died on 18 April 1938 (17th Safar 1351).
  • He had two sons, Shams-ul-Ulama Syed Mohammad (author of "Islam in the Light of Shiism") and Waqar-ul-ulema syed mohammad Kazim.
  • Mohammad was the founder of Madrasatul Waizeen.
  • He had two sons - Taj-ul-Ulama Maulana Syed Mohd Zaki and Emad ul ulema second Syed Mohd Razi.
  • Moulana Syed Mohammad Kazim also had two sons - Zubdatul Ulema Moulana Syed Mohammad Sadiq and Mohsinul millat Moulana Syed Mohammad Mohsin, both of whom have left a rich legacy of religious scholarship.
  • Ayatullah Moulana Syed Mohammad Sadiq who was the elder son of Moulana Syed Mohammad Kazim was a prolific writer and a renowned orator and scholar.
  • He served as the Vice Principal of Jamiae Nazmia and also worked as a teacher at Shia Arabic College where he taught ilme kalam (speculative theology), philosophy, tafseer (commentary and explication of the holy Qur'an) and Arabic literature.
  • His notable works include translations and exegesis of the Holy Qur'an, Nahjul Balagha, and Sahifaye Kamela which are the books of highest significance for Shias in particular and Muslims in general.
  • Besides, Moulana Sadiq saheb also composed a rich collection of Arabic verses and scholarly dissertations on diverse topics of Islamic literature.
  • Similarly, Moulana Syed Mohammad Mohsin, the younger son of Moulana Syed Mohammad Kazim was also a prominent scholar and is known for his poetic translation of the Holy Qur'an which comprises thousands of verses and exceeds the previous poetic translations in literary merit.
  • Moulana Syed Mohammad Sadiq left three sons and two daughters.
  • One of his grandsons named Moulana Raza Kazim Taqvi is also a prominent scholar based in Lucknow and is carrying forward the lofty legacy of Ayatullah Najmul Millat.
  • His dissertation on 'Zakhir Lucknowi' a poet from Lucknow was submitted in Lucknow University whereas his M.Phil dissertation submitted in Jamia Millia Islamia on elegies written by Non-Muslim poets has been published by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad memorial committee and stands as a valuable reference book on the subject. Najmul Millat's great grandson Ayatullah Syed Hamidul Hasan is the Principal of Jamia Nazmia and great-great-grandson Faridul Hasan, the principal of Nazmia Arabic College.
