Alan Dowty (born January 15, 1940) is an American author and Professor of Political Science Emeritus, University of Notre Dame.
He was formerly on the faculty of the Hebrew University (Jerusalem), 1964-1975, Kahanoff Chair Professor of Israel Studies at the University of Calgary, 2003-2006, and President of the Association for Israel Studies, 2005-2007.
In 2017 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in Israel Studies by the Association for Israel Studies and the Israel Institute.
His recent work focuses on Israeli politics and the Arab-Israeli conflict.Ira Sharkansky of The Hebrew University calls Dowty's "The Jewish State: A Century Later," "the most thorough and sensitive assessment of Israel's democracy that I have seen.".
Paul Scham, in Middle East Journal, says that Dowty's book "Israel/Palestine" "now receives pride of place at the top of my list of concise, illuminating histories to recommend.
