Stefano LaTorre (March 12, 1886 – July 1984) was a Sicilian American mobster who founded what would become the Bufalino crime family.LaTorre entered the U.S.
in May 1903, and was early leader of mobsters from Montedoro, Sicily.
He set up a criminal empire in Pittston-Scranton-Wilkes-barre areas of Pennsylvania.
LaTorre paid for the passage of his brother-in-law, Montedoro Mafia boss Santo Volpe to Pennsylvania in 1906.
They formed "the men from Montedoro".
In 1907, LaTorre was convicted with Charles Bufalino, uncle of future crime boss Russell Bufalino, for a protection racket against mine workers in the region.In 1908, Stefano LaTorre stepped down as boss of the Pittston.
Volpe became the new crime boss.
After stepping down LaTorre remained connected to the Mafia.
In 1955, he was called to a meeting with Joe Barbara where he refused to have a possible rat in the Pittston crime organization killed.
Barbara became angry with LaTorre and reduced his influence in the Mafia.
LaTorre remained a consultant to Russell Buffalino until his death in 1984.
He died of natural causes in 1984 at the age of 98.
