About Kanagaratnam Shanmugaratnam

  • Kanagaratnam Shanmugaratnam (2 April 1921 – 28 July 2018) was a renowned Singaporean pathologist.
  • Hailed as Singapore's "father of pathology" and best known for establishing the Singapore Cancer Registry (SCR) in 1967, Shanmugaratnam was also a world-leading expert on nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
  • He died on 28 July 2018, aged 97, at his home in Singapore.Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, the chief health scientist and executive director at the Ministry of Health's Office for Healthcare Transformation described Shanmugaratnam as "the pathologist to send the difficult cases which no one else could diagnose to" and "a very humble man and had a brilliant mind but always kind and gentle." He was the father of Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
