About Gustaf Wilhelm Finnberg

  • Gustaf Wilhelm Finnberg (21 November 1784 – 28 June 1833) was a Finnish painter. Finnberg was born in Pargas to a poor family.
  • At the age of 17 he studied painting, and in 1805 he took and passed the Handicraft Painters Guild apprentice examination in Turku.
  • He spent the years 1806 to 1820 in Stockholm, where he studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, although he never graduated.
  • While his primary interest was historical paintings, he made his living through painting portraits.
  • He also executed some miniatures and landscape works.
  • The painter Robert Wilhelm Ekman studied under Finnberg in early 1824. Many of his works were destroyed by the Great Fire of Turku, which affected Finnberg's life and career.
  • He left Turku and went to Stockholm afterwards in 1824.
  • Other than some works inspired by the fire, Finnberg struggled to make a living as an artist until his death on 28 June 1833.
