  • Born in Tasmania, he received a primary education before becoming a blacksmith.
  • He was a founding member and secretary of the Tasmanian Workers' Political League, which later became the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Labor Party.
  • He was a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly for Bass from 1909 to 1913 representing the Labor Party.
  • In 1914, he was elected to the Australian Senate, holding the seat until 1920.
  • He died in 1921.
  • His son, Allan Guy, later became a member of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
