About Charles Rowley (academic)

  • Charles Dunford Rowley (13 October 1906 – 18 September 1985) was an Australian public servant and academic.
  • He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1936 with a MA in History.
  • From 1950 to 1964, he worked as principal of the Australian School of Pacific Administration, which trained officials in the Australian territory of Papua New Guinea.
  • He served on the Social Science Research Council from 1964 to 1967, commissioning and writing several books on indigenous Australians, including The Destruction of Aboriginal Society.
  • In 1968, he moved to the University of Papua New Guinea and was appointed Professor of Politics, before returning to Australia to serve as the Director of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia from 1974 to 1979.
  • He worked as a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU) from 1979 to 1980, and received an honorary LL.D from the ANU in 1983.
