  • He is a member of the Social Democratic Party, part of the Party of European Socialists. He was a member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2004.
  • Since July 2009 he is again member of the European Parliament within the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament.
