About Yianni Diakomihalis
- John Diakomihalis (born 11 April 1999 in New York) is an American freestyle and collegiate wrestler of Greek origin.
- In folkstlyle, Diakomihalis is a two-time NCAA champion at 141 lbs.
- In freestyle, he is a two-time Cadet world champion at 58 kg in 2015 and at 63 kg in 2016.
- After freestyle wrestling in Cadet level, he began folkstyle wrestling for Cornell University in the Fall 2017 semester.
- In 2018 he won his first NCAA title at 141 pounds, beating Bryce Meredith of University of Wyoming in the finals, 7-4.
- In 2019 he repeated his success, beating Joey McKenna of Ohio State in the finals, in sudden victory, 6-4.
- Returning to freestyle, Diakomihalis won the 2019 U.S.
- Open, earning a birth directly in Final X for a spot on the Team USA for the World Championships without having to attend World Team Trials.
- At Final X, Diakomihalis faced Zain Retherford, losing the first of the best-of-three series 10-4.
- The second match of the series was initially scored 8-6 in favor of Diakomihalis but a matside challenge from Retherford resulted in a score change to 6-6, awarding the match - and series - to Retherford on tiebreaker criteria.
- Following Final X, Diakomihalis protested and won an arbitration nullifying the result of the second match.
- The remainder of the series resumed on September 2, 2019 at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA, with Retherford taking the rematch 3-1 and winning the spot on the USA team for the 2019 World Championship.
- Diakomihalis has wrestled in two additional Senior Level freestyle events, winning gold medals at Yasar Dogu in Istanbul, Turkey and the Ziolkowski Memorial in Warsaw, Poland.Yianni trains at Cornell and with the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club, which is also the club of four-time NCAA champion and two time Senior World Champion Kyle Dake and world junior silver medalist Vitali Arujau.
