About Okeover Longcroft

  • Okeover Butler Longcroft (6 March 1850 – 7 September 1871) was an English first-class cricketer.
  • Longcroft was a right-handed batsman who played as a wicketkeeper. Longcroft made his first-class debut for Hampshire against the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1869.
  • In this match Longcroft, despite being a wicketkeeper did not keep wicket.
  • Longcroft bowled in both the Marylebone Cricket Club's innings, taking three wickets in the match. Longcroft made his second and final first-class appearance for Hampshire in 1870 against Lancashire.
  • Longcroft kept wicket for Hampshire in this match, but despite that he bowled in both of Lancashire's innings, taking five wickets in the match.
  • His final career bowling average was 9.37. Longcroft died at his family home - Hall Place in Havant, Hampshire - on 7 September 1871.
  • Longcroft was just 21, and unmarried, when he died and the cause of his death was registered by the family doctor as typhoid fever.
  • His life is recorded in the book which documents the entire history of his family, The Longcrofts: 500 Years of a British Family by James Phillips-Evans, published by Amazon (2012).
