- He played college football at the University of Tennessee from 1964 to 1966 and was selected as a consensus first-team All-American at the linebacker position in 1966.
- He played professional football in the National Football League (NFL) as a linebacker for the Detroit Lions from 1967 to 1978.
- He was selected to play in the Pro Bowl after the 1970 season and was named the Lions' defensive most valuable player in 1975.
