- Rao was a right-handed batsman who bowled leg break googly.
- He was born in Park Royal, London. Rao made his first-class debut for Sussex against Cambridge University in 1996.
- From 1996 to 1999, he represented the county in 27 first-class matches, the last of which came against Gloucestershire in the County Championship.
