Richard Earl Berendzen (born September 6, 1938) is an American scientist.
As president of American University in the 1980s, Berendzen drastically raised the prestige of the university through a relentless public campaign.
Before he was forced to resign in disgrace in the 1990s, American University saw a fourfold increase in its endowment and the Board of Trustees became the wealthiest in the nation.
Berendzen served another thirteen years as professor of astronomy at AU before retiring from academia completely in 2006.
