About Samuel Crawford (jurist)

  • Samuel Crawford (April 20, 1820 – February 28, 1861) was an American jurist from Wisconsin. Born in Ballybay, Ireland, Crawford moved to New York City in 1840.
  • In 1841, Crawford moved to Galena, Illinois, where his brothers lived; he studied law and was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1844.
  • He then moved to New Diggings, Wisconsin in 1844 and in December that year to Mineral Point, Wisconsin to practice law.
  • He served on the Wisconsin Supreme Court from 1853 to 1855.
  • He was defeated for reelection in 1855 and resumed his law practice in Mineral Point.
  • He ran for Wisconsin Attorney General and for a Congressional seat, but was defeated.Crawford died of "congestion of the brain" (an ischemic stroke) at his home in Mineral Point on February 28, 1861.
