  • He was first elected as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Clare constituency at a by-election on 22 July 1959, succeeding Éamon de Valera who had been elected President of Ireland.
  • He was re-elected at the 1961 general election and at the 1965 general election.
  • He did not contest the 1969 general election.
  • His son, Fiachra Ó Ceallaigh, is an Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Dublin.
