About Stephen Tuckwell

  • Stephen John Tuckwell, GC (4 June 1897 – 2 October 1966) was a sailor in the Royal Navy who awarded the George Cross for his "great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty" in bomb disposal work during the Blitz of late 1940.
  • He was attached to HMS Vernon and rendered many unexploded devices safe, including several parachute mines which fell onto the bank of the River Roding in Essex.
