About Tom Gunning

  • Thomas Francis Gunning (March 4, 1862 – March 17, 1931) was a Major League Baseball catcher.
  • He played all or part of six seasons in the majors, from 1884 until 1889, for the Boston Beaneaters, Philadelphia Quakers and Philadelphia Athletics. Gunning was used mainly as a reserve catcher, never playing in more than 48 games in a season.
  • He played that many in 1885 for the Beaneaters, which was more than any other catchers for Boston that year.
  • In his last two seasons, he served as backup to Wilbert Robinson, who went on to a Hall of Fame career as a manager.
