About Tôn Thất Đính (mandarin)

  • Tôn Th?t Ðính (Hán t?: ???, 15 July 1812–5 July 1893) was a Vietnamese mandarin of the Nguy?n Dynasty who served under Emperor T? Ð?c.
  • He was a descendant of Tôn Th?t Hi?p (Nguy?n Phúc Thu?n).Tôn Th?t Ðính was the governor of H?i Duong Province.
  • He was allowed home in 1864 due to ill health, however, after recovery, his position was never resumed because of his poor eyesight.
  • His son Tôn Th?t Thuy?t went on to become a high-ranking mandarin, who became the regent upon the death of T? Ð?c. After Thuy?t launched the C?n Vuong movement that attempted to install the boy Emperor Hàm Nghi as the head of an independent Vietnam, the French colonial authorities captured Ðính in an attempt to get his son to capitulate.
  • However, Thuy?t continued fighting against French.
  • Tôn Th?t Ðính and his offspring were banished from the imperial clan.
  • Ðính was not allowed to use the surname Tôn Th?t, and forced to rename himself Lê Ðính (??).
  • Ðính was thrown into Côn Ð?o Prison together with two mandarins, Nguy?n Van Tu?ng and Ph?m Th?n Du?t.
  • Later, they were deported to Tahiti in the Pacific Ocean.
  • While on the sea voyage, Du?t died, and the authorities threw his body overboard.
  • Ðính was allowed to come back to Vietnam in 1886.
  • He brought the body of Nguy?n Van Tu?ng back to Hu?.
  • He died on 5 July 1893.
